Male breast reduction for gynecomastia patients

Every second man today is affected by an enlargement of the breasts. Breast development can occur during puberty by hormones and it affects about 40 percent of adolescent boys. This problem can also be a side effect of some medications and drugs such as anti-depressants, blood-pressure medicine, marijuana, steroids, and other medicines containing hormons. Men with gynecomastia often avoid normal activities such as swimming, exercise, and sex because they want to hide their body and problem. Because there is no sport or diet that can resolve gynecomastia, only plastic surgery can solve this problem.

Instructions before surgery

Before surgery men have to undergo ultrasound examination. Your general practitioner has to issue a medical certificate to release you for the operation. A routine laboratory test must be made (blood cell count, ions, liver and kidney function, Prothrombin, blood sugar, blood group). ECG Thorax Roentgen. Smoking and drinking alcohol is forbidden. Do not eat or drink or smoke 6 hours before surgery. Chewing gums and drops are also permitted. Before surgery you have to take off your rings, jewellery, piercing and take out your dentures, contact lenses and remove your make-up.

The operation

Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anaesthesia, time in surgery is an hour and a half, an overnight hospital stay is needed. If the enlargement of breasts consists primarily of excessive fatty tissue, the plastic surgeon may use liposuction. If the cause is the excess glandular tissue, it can be cut out with a scalpel, and excess skin may have to be removed, too.

After surgery antibiotics are given to the patient. Discomfort and pain after surgery can be treated by painkillers. To help reduce swelling, the patient has to wear an elastic pressure garment continuously for a week or two. Stitches will be removed in 7-10 days after the procedure. Patients have to avoid sexual, physical and sport activities for about 4-5 weeks. Avoid exposing surgical scars to the sun for at least six months. Complications and risks may include infection, bleeding, inflammation, damages to nerves, wound healing problems, or reaction to anaesthesia.
