Liposuction

Anyone can have unwanted fat deposits at different areas of the body, including the chin, neck, cheeks, upper arms and above the breasts, abdomen, buttocks, hips, thighs, knees, calves, and ankles. Liposuction is a plastic surgery method to remove excessive fat from these problem areas of the body, especially the abdomen, arms, thighs and neck, because these fat deposits can?t be removed with dieting or doing exercises.

This cosmetic surgery procedure is suitable for both men and women. Men can also benefit from liposuction so that excessive fat will be removed from the problem area where fat has accumulated (for example from the sides of the waist or from the breasts), restoring the body to a more masculine physique.

Liposuction - The surgery procedure

Liposuction is performed under general anesthesia, but in some cases when the patient is smaller, local anesthesia can also be used. The surgery takes about 1-1,5 hours. Time in surgery varies depending on the size of the area that is being treated. Many people usually choose to treat multiple areas, which will increase the total surgery time. Your surgeon will make an incision and insert a cannula under the skin, scraping it along the underside skin surface to loosen the fat deposits. The fat deposits are then sucked into the vacuum through a tube connected to the cannula with vibration. Finally the incisions will be closed and the treatment area will be wrapped with elastic bandages,?and support hosiery or a girdle is prescribed, to compress tissue and help control swelling and bruising. Patients have to stay in the clinic for a night.

Recovery after liposuction

The skin will be swollen and sore for several days, but ice can be applied to reduce the pain. An antibiotic may be prescribed to reduce the possibility of infection. A support girdle has to be worn 4-6 weeks day and night. Refrain from heavy lifting and straining after surgery for three or four weeks. Easy body exercises are permitted only 4 weeks after surgery. Doing sports (tennis, jogging, swimming) is only possible after 6-8 weeks. Avoid intensive exposure to sun for at least 2 -3 months Liposuction final results may not be fully evident for up to six months. Liposuction can be repeated for a given area of the body a number of times, as long as the area has completely healed from the previous treatment. But this is not usually necessary, because with traditional liposuction the fat removal is permanent.

Complications of liposuction

Liposuction is a widely performed procedure,?health risks from complications are low, however, as in every surgical intervention, there are also complications that can occur. The most serious complication is an inflammation that ranges from a little flush that normally disappears in a couple of days to a serious inflammation which may cause the need to reopen the area to remove mucus. Bleeding may also occur, causing haematoma. This can also cause inflammation. The sensitivity of the treated area occurs usually temporarily and will diminish, but in some cases, it can become permanent. Skin discolouration can also occur, and skin may become a shade darker than the surrounding area and the skin over the operated area may adhere roughly, causing dents on its surface.
